What you can set
Size
Small, Default, Large, Extra Large
Text color
White, Yellow, Cyan, Green
Background
Transparent, Dim Black, Solid Black, Deep Blue
What to pick on a TV
From three metres away, Large with a Dim Black background is readable on almost any scene. Transparent looks cleaner and disappears over bright footage, which is exactly when you need it most.
Picture-based subtitles ignore these settings. They are images from the source, so their size and color are already baked in.
