Where recordings are saved, and how to record to a USB drive

Free space, external folders, file names, and rules that clean up old recordings for you.

A recording is a real file on the device. Settings, then Recording, is where all of this lives.

Free space

The Recording section shows the space left where recordings are being written, so you find out before a three hour match rather than after it.

Record to external storage

  1. Plug in a USB drive or insert an SD card

Let the device mount it first.

  2. Settings, then Recording, then choose the folder

Pick a folder on the drive, or switch back to the app’s own storage at any time.

  3. Leave the drive attached

A recording cannot continue to a drive that has been pulled out.

Cheap sticks are the usual cause of a failed long capture. A drive that cannot keep up with a high bitrate channel drops the recording part way through. If captures keep ending early on the same drive, that is your answer.

File names

A name pattern decides what each file is called, so recordings land in a form your other devices can sort.

Cleaning up automatically

Retention either keeps recordings forever or deletes them a set number of days after they were made. Set it once and the drive stops filling silently.

How many at a time

The recording section also sets how many captures may run at once. Lower it if your playlist allows few streams, raise it if your service is generous.

Your plan and your files

Recordings you already made stay playable whatever happens to your plan. See Recording limits and conflicts.
